Masterclass advice - The Best Tips & Tricks!

Hello hello hello!

It's been such a long time since I've posted! My apologies, it's been more than just crazy in the past few weeks between graduation, two jobs and music!
I thought that since school is around the corner (not really...but kind of), I could share some tricks and tips about Masterclasses!

There's always anxiety around Masterclasses, especially for young or new singers!
There is nothing to worry about! That is the number one rule! Everyone there is ready to learn and support you as you get advice, tips and tricks from the musician who is hosting the masterclass! They are just trying to support and aid you in becoming the best musician you can be!

Things that you should bring:

  • WATER. Never forget to hydrate, especially when you're nervous! Packing a few small and quiet snacks never hurts since some Masterclasses may run longer than others.
  • A Notebook and a Pen. While you may only be observing the Masterclass, you cannot rely on your brain to remember all the information especially since you may not be directly applying the advice physically.
  • A Recording Device. Most phones and iPods have this function, but if you do not have a device that records, I recommend that you find one (even a cheap one off of ebay), so you can remember and hear the differences that the advice makes!
  • Extra Copies. You never know. Your accompanist could be extra forgetful that morning, or your music folder falls into a puddle, life is unexpected and it's best to come prepared by having extra copies of EVERYTHING.
  •  Bring a Hair Tie. Some musicians like to fidget with their hair or try to hide their faces with it when they sing. If you pull back your hair, if adds the look of confidence and helps eliminate distractions and bad habits. Plus, Mom and Dad ALWAYS want to see your shining face!

Tips for Masterclasses -

  1. This one is just a general rule of thumb for performing, always wear comfortable shoes and shoes that you have sung in before. If you can bring your performance shoes with you to the dress rehearsal, wear them. A change in shoes can cause a change in alignment especially high heels!
  2. Don't be scared! Use your music if you have too, but don't hide behind it. The audience and host are just trying to help you. This is a growing space where they want to hear mistakes so they can help you! Don't worry, you'll be fine!
  3. Whether you agree or not with the host, always take in and think about their advice and tips. Everyone has different styles and views and if yours don't match up, that's fine! Just be gracious and keep a smile on your face.
  4. Sing Loud and Sing Proud! Do your best so that you can be proud of yourself at the end. Don't be too hard on yourself and enjoy the process!

That's it folks! Hopefully I'll be able to start posting more frequently, but until next time!
