Duets for Love Birds

The birds are singing, love is in the air and bright pink neon hearts are in the windows of every department store known to man kind.
Valentines day is among us, and soon enough, everyone will be looking for that someone special to snuggle up with and exchange 5$ candy and some cheesy cards.
Convientley, Opera tends to be dramatic (just like some relationships), and is often filled with copious amounts of love triangles that sometimes they are just waaaaay too complex (I am looking at YOU Rigoletto!)

This first duet chosen is Pa-Pa-Pa! from the Magic Flute! This silly aria depicts lovers and their silly plans for the future as they argue playfully about the amount of children they will have. This up beat number never fails to bring a smile to my face, plus they look like actual love birds!

Bess, You is my Woman now from Porgy and Bess is the second choice. This aria set during a time of oppression and these two lovers focus on each other during the hard times...well, for now at least ;)

Going back to the early days, Pur Ti Miro from the Coronation of Poppea steals the third spot. This is another beautiful duet showcasing the undying love of Emperor Niro and Poppea...again, for now ;)
This clip shows some of the original instruments orchestrated during the time of this composition, so bare with the long intro!

The next piece, written by Wagner, is O sink, hernieder, Nacht der Liebe from Tristan und Isolde where in which they are declaring their love for each other. At this point Tristan decries the realm of daylight which is unreal and keeps him apart from Islode. It is only in night that they can truly be together and only in the long night of death can they be eternally united.

And finally, a song for all you unrequited lovers, and a personal favourite of mine, Non So Piu from the Marriage of Figaro. Nothing sums up love better than an angsty teenage boy surrounded by gorgeous women.

I hope you all have a lovely Valentine's Day with all your loved ones, and that perhaps some of these tunes will bring a smile to your face (or perhaps inspiration to confess your undying love for someone!)

Until next time,
Tessa
